Scarves

Having no sewing ability or no sewing machine is still no reason not to do it yourself window treatment.  Having no money in the budget to spend on window treatments doesn’t have to stop you either.  Using just door stoppers at a cost of less then a dollar can be placed at each corner near the top of the window to hold a piece of fabric or sheet making a swag or scarf type curtain for any window.  The next time you are cleaning a linen closet or going to a garage sale don’t pass those old sheets up or even table cloths these are both great idea’s to make a window treatment.

Always carry the measurements of your windows in your purse so that you can easily access how much fabric you will need for the project.  Again there is no set rule of thumb when hanging a scarf across the top of your window.  Depending on the effect you want and the room you are doing will designate how much fabric you want.  You will have to adjust the scarf to your liking and to shorten the length you can fashion a knot at each door stop.  A loose knot will look the best, but play around with the fabric to see what looks best to you.

If the door stops idea doesn’t appeal to you maybe a more natural or rustic effect is wanted.  This next idea is adventurous but worth the extra effort to bring a natural woodsy effect to your do it yourself window treatment.  Adventure into a park or any large woody area and look for broken tree limbs.  Do not cut off a limb from a healthy tree as you would want one that has dried out.  Making sure you have the measurements of the window you plan to decorate.

Using L brackets, cup hooks, nails or screws fasten the dried limb above the window.  You can paint this limb or just leave it the natural color depending on the look you want.  Taking your piece of fabric drape it across the top of the limb at each end, making sure it is securely fastened.  Then play with the fabric until you achieve the look you want.  There are so many options you can do with the fabric take your time and use your imagination, you could surprise yourself.

Either of these ideas will spark your decorative talent and get yourself motivated to let your imagination go.  Try adding a vine of leaves or flowers to the top of the swag, or maybe a string of beautiful beads.  Let your imagination wonder and your artistic side comes out, there are no limits as to the possibilities when it comes to do it yourself window treatments.
