Curtains

Adding color to a room can be as easy as hanging colorful curtains or adding touches of color to the window in the room.  Sunlight flowing through the window will brighten any room and adding a do it yourself window treatment in any color can make a dull room into something bright and beautiful.

Don’t worry about sewing talent, if you can sew a straight line you can hang new curtains in just a few hours.  Adding little touches to your existing curtains can change the whole look of the room.  Placing colorful napkins on a diagonal across the top of your curtain can coordinate your table décor with your curtains.  Have you ever thought of using placemats for curtains for a quick do it yourself window treatment in your kitchen?  You can easily add Velcro to the end of a placemat and then to the curtain rod and in just a few minutes you have a wonderful window treatment you made yourself.

You could also check at your local fabric store for patterned fabric that has been made to make napkins, scarves or placemats out of.  The design can be cut right out of the fabric and sewn into a square or rectangle.  In the picture below I had taken a straight piece of fabric and because I wanted white showing to the outside of my window I sewed the print and the white piece together making a large rectangle to fit the window.  Make a pocket at the top to fit your curtain rod.  If you were to hold the fabric up to the window it would be the same size as the window.

Taking that same fabric I made strips of fabric twice the same length as the window.  If your talent doesn’t lie in sewing you could just buy ribbon in the needed length. These will be the straps to gather up the bottom of the curtain so that some sun shine can be seen.  These can be adjusted by using safety pins or sewing them to the desired length.  Slide them onto the curtain rod adjusting them evenly gathering the fabric up.

The last step you need to do to finish your do it yourself window treatment is to find either a coordinating fabric or napkin to lay on and angle across the top of the rod.  This coordinating fabric may be changed as often as you like in as many colors you can find and like.  You may even want to put holiday napkins across the top such as Christmas napkins, Halloween napkins or Easter napkins.  Your only limit will be your imagination.
